to all my friends around the world. Today i am going to introduce a very prestigious temple (Chamunda Devi Temple) which is located in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, India, this temple has a huge importance and devotees from different states of India visit here in every month. So by saying "Jai Maa Kali" let's get started.

Some Important Facts about Chamunda Devi Temple:

  • The temple is dedicated to Goddess Chamunda/Kali (Black) which is known as Goddess of War.
  • The temple stands on the spur of a hill at a high point and gives a magnificent view of the river Ravi and the beautiful Chamba town, you can see the beautiful ranges of Himalays from this point.
  • It was built by Raja Umed Singh in 1762.

  • The temple consists of a square sanctum and open mandapa in front over a raised platform.
  • This temple is one of the major holy place in Himachal Pradesh and it's totally accessible by road.
  • The roof of the temple is constructed with pyramidical shape and the whole temple is made of slates stones as you can see in the above picture.
  • The roof is supposed by 4 carved wooden pillars at the 4 corners of the temple.
  • The roof of the temple is made up of Lantern type and is divided into 9 squares by cross beams.
  • The entire roof of the temple including the beams is beautifully carved with floral designs and sculptural works.
  • The beams of the temple is carved with images of male and female deities, Rishis Gandharvas (Sages), asuras (demons), flying figures, animals and birds.
  • A huge Brass Bell situated at the entrance of the main temple gate.
  • The temple was declared protected as a monument of National Importance with notification no. 1634/ Dated: 17-9-1952.

History associated with Chamunda Devi Temple:

When Goddess Ambika was sitting at the top of the hill, the two devils namely Chanda and Munda tried to disturb her on which she got angered and turn into Goddess Kali in tiger skinned Sari and a wreath of skull to kill the demons and after killing them Goddess Ambika declared that Kali would now  be worshipped as Chamunda devi.

  • The temple is 700 year old.
  • Statues of other Gods and Goddess also kept there.
  • A tank also located nearby temple which is used by devotees for bathing before worship.

How to reach at the Temple ?

There are 2 ways to access the temple.

  • By Road: The nearby bus stand is H.R.T.C Bus Depot which is located at a distance of around 4.5 km from Chamunda Devi Temple. buses are availble to easily access the temple and you can also use your own mode of transportation.

  • By Train: The nearby railway station is Pathankot railway station which is located at a distance of around 120 km from Chamba and the remaining journey you can completed by using public transport which is mentioned above.
